Happiness. We all want it, we all seek it but so often it eludes us. I believe that happiness is a state a mind, it is not something you can just attain and keep but rather something you have to constantly work on. I also believe that happiness is a choice. We choose how we will approach situations, we choose how we will deal with them and ultimately we choose how we feel about them. One of my favourite sayings is:
“Change Your Perspective, Change Your Life”
By no means is this an easy task/choice. Life is hard and everyday in spite of your challenges you have to make the conscious effort to choose joy, choose happiness. In my opinion, it’s about developing a lifestyle that caters to what makes you happy. Here are some ideas for creating a happy and chic lifestyle and living your best life.
Make a Happy List
I know what you’re thinking. Really? Yes. Really. Essentially, this is quite similar to making a list of goals, except it specifically helps to reinforce your choice to be happy. In 2016, during my first semester of my Postgraduate degree, I made my first happy list. I was experiencing several challenges and I was emotionally and physically drained. I enjoy writing and lists, so I jotted out a list of activities and tasks for each month that I felt would make me happy. This included school/career goals, travel plans, lifestyle changes and adventures. I made a conscious effort to work through most of the things on that list and on reflection, that was one of the most enjoyable and cheerful years of my life.
Take Care of Yourself
Happiness comes from within so treating your body, mind and soul well is essential. Be mindful of how you are nourishing your body. Eating healthy and exercising can do wonders for your mood and your health. While you may not love either initially, the after effects are certainly worthwhile. If you look good, you feel good and if you feel good there are no limits to what you can achieve. Dressing well also plays a part. Take pride in your appearance. With anything you do, you should aim to put your best foot forward.
Be mindful also about the type of relationships you engage in. To remain happy and positive, you must distance yourself from negativity and negative people. Protect your personal space.
I may be biased, but travel is one of the greatest sources of happiness. When we travel we are able to break free of the monotony/routine of our lives and gain new experiences and memories. It helps to build character and confidence. Especially solo-travel. Many times we don’t travel often enough due to financial, family or work constraints. The issue is that we believe we have to leave our respective countries to travel. We don’t. As small as my island Anguilla is (35 square miles), there are many places I haven’t visited, roads I haven’t travelled and hidden treasures I haven’t discovered. For me, travel is about discovery. Discover your native land and go out there and discover the world 🙂
This doesn’t mean that you should go and jump out of a plane right now. You don’t have to be willing to risk death to be adventurous. You can be adventurous simply by stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing something that you normally might never do. This could include travelling solo or dining alone, starting a business, engaging in thrill-seeking activities like zip lining, moving to a foreign country or even just trying different ethnic foods. No doubt it will seem daunting at first but the experience will make you happier in the long run knowing you conquered a challenge/fear and created a new experience/memory while doing it. We all need a little adventure in our lives 🙂
Learn To Let Go Of The Things That You Cannot Control
This is perhaps one of the most difficult realities I have had to come to terms with. The only person you have control over is yourself. Happiness will continue to elude you if you try to control the behaviour and actions of others. This applies to relationships, jobs and everyday life. Learn to be content with what is within your control and channel your focus and energy into those areas. In the words of Maya Angelou “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”
In this age of social media, we are constantly faced with ‘the grass is greener on the other side’ content. We spend so much time wanting more out of life and thinking about all the things that we feel our lives are missing that we often forget to be grateful for all the good aspects of our lives. Learn to practice gratitude and reflection each day from the moment you wake up. Don’t reserve gratitude only for the special occasions. Be grateful for life, be grateful for what you do have and be grateful for the opportunity to be able to continue to live and grow. If you really want to find happiness, practice gratitude daily.
